LED lights could play a greater role in Eindhoven's public illuminations as the Netherlands city seeks innovative designs using the luminaires.

In a call to developers based all over the world, the city is asking for interactive and intelligent lighting fixtures to be created.

They must be energy-efficient and aesthetically pleasing, with a particular focus on LED lights.

Eindhoven is already known as the City of Light, due to the significant presence of decorative lighting fixtures in areas of the city and illuminated public works of art.

The latest project, named Strijp-S, looks to move this status into a new generation by providing a real-world laboratory for the most ambitious lighting designers to try their concepts in.

Programme director for Eindhoven City of Light Rik van Stiphout says: "Strijp-S is to serve as a testing ground for a new light experience."

That is not only limited to LED lights, but also includes new ways of interacting with the luminaires and innovative control systems.

Posted by Andre Dixon
