A hotspot in the IT market in 2011 could come in the form of wireless communications, according to a forecast from analyst Frost & Sullivan.

The research organisation explains that 100 million smartphones alone could be sold in the Asia Pacific region over the course of the year.

By 2015, this figure is forecasted to rise to 500 million as the devices become mass-market.

Nitin Bhat, partner and vice-president of Frost's ICT Practice Asia Pacific, says third-generation wireless communications devices offer growth potential throughout the region.

Meanwhile, 2G handsets have reached saturation in some areas, but still offer opportunities in India and China.

Frost adds that the expected 100 million smartphone sales in 2011 "represents nearly 20 per cent of all mobile devices sold".

The company's ICT Practice provides market insight on a global and regional scale in Asia Pacific, Latin America, North America, and Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Posted by Andre Dixon
