Market leaders top $100bn in semiconductor sales

A new report from Gartner notes how the top ten companies in the semiconductors sector saw demand for their products exceed $100 billion (£63 billion) in 2010.

In all, $104.3 billion was spent on semiconductors as measured on the "total available market" metric.

Unlike in previous years, when only brand-name integrated circuits were included in the report, this also accounts for white-label sales, which represent a growing proportion of the market according to Gartner.

Overall, the market saw a year-on-year increase in sales of 33.7 per cent, with the top ten producers securing more than a third of all global revenues between them.

Meanwhile, the upper end of the market appeared consistent with 2009, as only two new entrants into the shortlist were seen.

The research report was authored by Gartner's Japan-based senior research analyst Masatsune Yamaji, who addresses sales of semiconductors at the region, application, company and device levels.
