Further improvement of the internal structure of LED lights is expected to make the technology more viable for mass applications, reports Research and Markets.

In its newly published study LED ManTech 2010, the analyst explains that there are still some characteristics of LED lights that, if resolved, would widen the market for the luminaires.

For instance, when exposed to high current, present-day LEDs do not achieve the level of output efficiency that might be desired, the report says.

This "high-current efficiency droop" is one of the priorities for developers to solve in order to broaden the usage of the technology.

However, this does not prevent the bulbs from finding rapidly increasing popularity among end-users.

Between 2009 and 2015, the packaged LED market is predicted to achieve compound annual growth of 28.2 per cent.

The research was carried out by French analyst Yole Development, which reports market trends in photovoltaics, semiconductors, nanotechnology and microelectromechanical systems.

Posted by Michael Lowe
