A greater number of consumer electronics devices with networking capabilities are driving demand higher for the wireless communications chips which allow this, reports ABI Research.

The analyst says netbooks and media tablets are spearheading this trend, along with other "always connected" products.

As a result, integrated circuits which enable wireless communications are expected to have sold 22 per cent more in terms of volume in 2010 than they did in 2009.

The analyst notes that the final figures for the year have not yet been calculated, but adds: "When the final numbers for 2010 are gathered, shipments of wireless connectivity chipsets will reach a total of approximately two billion units."

By 2015, a compound annual growth rate of 30 per cent is expected to take this number higher to seven billion units.

ABI Research's Wireless Connectivity Research Service specialises in estimating the market size for integrated circuits required for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth networking, among other technologies.

Posted by Sagar Jethani
