PCs face new competition from wireless communications tablets

PC sales are facing increasing competition from the rising popularity of iPads and other wireless communications tablets.

Such is the assertion of Gartner analyst Mikako Kitagawa, who notes that consumer demand for wireless communications products surged as 2010 drew to a close.

And while the western European market was said to be restrained during the fourth quarter of last year, research by Gartner notes consumer spending shifted away from PCs to other electronic devices such as e-readers and media tablets.

"Media tablets undoubtedly intensified the competition in the consumer market," she claims.

But while she notes wireless communication tablets are not a direct replacement for PCs, "they are viewed as good-enough devices for those who want to have a second and third connected device for content consumption usage".

Based in Stamford, Connecticut, Gartner claims to be the world's leading IT research and advisory company, providing in-depth studies on wireless communications devices and other products to clients in some 85 countries across the world.
