The worldwide software industry is being driven by three trends, including uptake of wireless communications technology, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

Along with the introduction of cloud computing and greater consumer understanding of technology, wireless communications in smartphone and tablet form factors are pushing the sector forward, the consultancy says.

Internationally, the UK is a strong contender within the market, serving as home to six of the sector's top 100 companies worldwide and as a location for offices of many others.

Meanwhile, the US dominates the list as a whole, while Japan ranks alongside the UK in terms of number of entries, appearing six times in the top 100.

According to the analysis, software licensing and delivery is a growing issue in an increasingly interconnected world of cloud computing and wireless data access.

"The rapid growth in use of mobile devices has also transferred customer behaviours relating to acquisition and use of software," PwC says.

Research conducted by the firm works on the vision of doing "the right thing for our clients, our people and our communities".
