In news that may interest wireless communications device manufacturers, chipmaker CSR has claimed its GPS products from Samsung and Huawei will help it recover in the smartphone market.

The firm delivered a weaker-than-expected forecast for the current quarter, as well as a five per cent decline in first-quarter sales.

But according to CSR, growth would come through its newest combination chips and the commitment from a manufacturer for its wifi-bluetooth chip.

Earlier this week, CSR's planned takeover of Zoran was thrown into doubt. The takeover of the imaging chipmaker may not now go ahead due to poor results.

CSR confirmed Zoran was affected by Cisco's decision to close its Flip video camera unit as well as supply chain problems in Japan.

In other industry news, total handsets sold to end users globally will reach 1.46 billion in 2011.

This is according to Pyramid Research's quarterly smartphone forecast, which said that smartphone sales will account for 27 percent of total handset sell-through.

Posted by Andre Dixon
