LED light bulb controllable from Android set to be launched

By the start of 2012, consumers will be able to buy an LED light bulb controllable from an Android device.

The step forms part of Google's move into home automation, cnet.com has reported.

At a recent conference, Google demonstrated how Android devices can control multiple devices in the home. These include lighting, appliances, thermostats, and music.

The internet-based services provider has designed a lighting demo system with Lighting Sciences Group.

Eric Holland, the director of electrical engineering at Lighting Sciences Group, commented: "Lighting is very visible and prevalent so it made sense for it to be first foray for the platform.

"Every one of the lights has a radio integrated inside the lamp so there's no additional equipment."

In other industry news, a report by market research firm ElectroniCast Consultants has revealed that global consumption of packaged LEDs used in signage and professional displays rose 17 per cent from $1.3 billion in 2009 to $1.52 billion in 2010.
