&lt;span&gt;Apple is inching closer to becomeing the world&amp;amp;#39;s dominant smartphone vendor, new research has revealed.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;IDC&amp;amp;#39;s latest Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker observed that Nokia continues to shed market share.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;In the first quarter of the year, Apple shipped 18.7 million smartphones, up from just 8.7 million a year ago.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;This is a record number of shipments for a single quarter.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;Nokia, meanwhile, shipped 24.2 million smartphones, which is up from 21.5 million a year ago.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;Elsewhere, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion has increased its shipments last quarter, now owning a 14 per cent slice of the market.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;Research In Motion has, in fact, unveiled two new BlackBerry Bold smartphones.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;The new devices, the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and the 9930, feature a design that integrates a BlackBerry keyboard with a high resolution, capacitive touch screen.
