&lt;span&gt;UK chip designer Arm Holdings has announced strong first quarter profits, boosted by sales of smartphones and tablet computers.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;Indeed, profits before tax rose to £30.5 million in the first three months of 2011, compared with £25.9 million in 2010.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;The firm’s chip designs are used in many mobile devices, such as mobile phones and tablets.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;&amp;amp;quot;Shipments of Arm-processor based chips increased 33 per cent on the same period last year driven by growth in smartphones, tablets, digital TVs and &lt;/span&gt;&lt;a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://www.element-14.com/community/groups/Embedded" target="_blank"&gt;microcontrollers&lt;/a&gt;&lt;span&gt;,&amp;amp;quot; commented Arm chief executive Warren East.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;&amp;amp;quot;Arm&amp;amp;#39;s revenue growth enables us to continue to invest in innovative technology development at the same time as delivering strong increases in profits and cash flow,&amp;amp;quot; he added.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;In other news, Orange has launched its &amp;amp;#39;Do Some Good&amp;amp;#39; application, which is designed to get the UK working to help out charitable causes through their smartphone.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;Orange allows users to download the app and then choose a range of simple tasks to do using their phone.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;The move comes after Orange surveyed 1,311 adults and found that nearly three-quarters would be willing to donate their time via this application while doing everyday tasks.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;a href="http://feeds.directnews.co.uk/feedtrack/justcopyright.gif?feedid=1785&amp;amp;itemid=800525165"&gt;&lt;img alt="ADNFCR-1785-ID-800525165-ADNFCR" src="http://feeds.directnews.co.uk/feedtrack/justcopyright.gif?feedid=1785&amp;amp;itemid=800525165" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;div style="clear:both;"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
