Wireless communication device manufacturers may be interested to hear that Softbank Corp, a leading Japanese mobile phone operator, has revealed its operating profits jumped 35.1 per cent for the year that ended in March.

The firm acknowledged that its profits were boosted by higher sales of smartphones, Reuters has reported.

Softbank booked an operating profit of 629.2 billion yen in its last business year.

However, the company has refused to give an operating profit forecast for the current financial year.

Meanwhile, Sony Ericsson last week unveiled the Xperia Mini and Xperia Mini Pro smartphones in London.

Both devices run Android 2.3 and are powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor. The manufacturer explained that the main goal with the Xperia family of phones "is to offer the most entertaining smartphones, and to do that with choice".

Furthermore, it said that both GSM phones will be available globally in selected markets starting in July.
