Carphone Warehouse raises full-year earnings guidance

In news that may interest wireless communications device manufacturers, Carphone Warehouse, the UK's largest mobile phone retailer, has raised its full-year earnings guidance for the third consecutive quarter.

According to the firm, strong sales of smartphones and tablet computers had enabled it to defy the tough economic climate.

Full-year earnings per share would now be in the 14.5p to 15p range, compared with previous guidance of 13.5p to 14p, the group said.

Roger Taylor, Carphone Warehouse's chief executive, commented: "We are well positioned to continue to capitalise on the rapid development and proliferation of smartphones and the ever-expanding range of tablets coming to market, despite the uncertainty around the economic environment."

Elsewhere, Motorola has begun selling its new Atrix Android smartphone in the UK. Some 420 Orange mobile phone stores will initially stock the Froyo 2.2 handset.

It has been confirmed that the network provider will offer the Motorola Atrix for free from £35-a-month with 600 minutes of calltime, 750MB of data and unlimited text messaging.
