Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing reveals Q1 profits

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, the world's largest contract manufacturer of chips, has reported first-quarter profits that beat analysts' estimates.

As demand for smartphones and tablets drove sales of pricier chips, the firm's net income climbed eight per cent from a year earlier to 1.3 billion.

"Smartphone demand is generally good, and TSMC's strong pricing indicates they're getting a good portion of that," commented Randy Abrams, who rates the stock "outperform" at Credit Suisse Group AG in Taipei.

In other news, ON Semiconductor has launched a single channel LED driver tuned for low power applications, electronicsweekly.com reports.

Using a patented architecture and integrating fault protection and fault diagnostics, the CAT3661is able to drive a single LED backlight with a current of up to 5mA.

The new device is ideal for use in equipment powered by coin cell batteries because of soft-start current limiting and short-circuit protection.

Applications for the driver include low power backlighting for LCDs as well as backlighting for a wide range of portable handheld devices, the manufacturer explained.
