In news that may interest wireless communication device customers and manufacturers, Apple's next-generation iPhone will have a faster processor and will begin shipping in September.

This is according to three people with direct knowledge of the company's supply chain, Reuters reports.

The sources declined to be identified because the plans for the new iPhone were not yet public, while an Apple spokeswoman was not available for comment.

"For some suppliers, Apple is their cash cow, or their bread and butter," commented Vincent Chen, an analyst at Yuanta Securities.

"With all these versions being launched so frequently, it will be the so-called low-margin suppliers, such as those that assemble the phones, who will benefit the most."

Meanwhile, new research has found that 38 per cent of all smartphones in Britain now run Google Android, compared to 35.9 per cent in France and 35.5 per cent in Germany.

Android has significant market share in Japan and America, with 58.3 per cent and 54.7 per cent respectively.

Posted by Simon Jones
