Illegal filesharing 'poses threat to the mobile music market'

In news that may interest wireless communication device manufacturers, Juniper Research has claimed that illegal filesharing poses a threat to the mobile music market just as it has to the wider digital music market.

Daniel Ashdown, a research analyst at the wireless sector analyst firm, remarked: "It's certainly a threat that already exists and it is an emerging threat."

He explained that the easy accessibility of BitTorrent applications via certain online software stores "certainly facilitates the illegal filesharing through the mobile network and on the mobile handset".

In addition to this, Mr Ashdown observed that while "people do share content illegally on torrents," they "can be used for legitimate purposes".

And while he was unsure whether the Digital Economy Act covers mobile devices, Mr Ashdown said that Juniper Research favours graduated response as one way of combating online copyright infringement.

A report published recently by Parks Associates found that the proliferation of smart mobile, connected consumer electronics and new cloud-based delivery models are expanding music services into more unique consumer devices.
