Android 'unlikely to be hijacked by a mobile manufacturer'

Wireless communication device customers and manufacturers may be interested to hear that Google's Android mobile operating system (OS) is to remain free of outside influence in the mobile space, rather than mirror Symbian's relationship with Nokia.

This is according to Michael Morgan, senior analyst of mobile devices at ABI Research, who observed that it appears unlikely that any particular smartphone original equipment manufacturer will "hijack" the Android ecosystem and road map.

Google is "not really in the handset business", he explained, but added that it is "the key owner and driver of the software".

Nokia's domination of the mobile market and contribution to Symbian, on the other hand, made that OS "more of a Nokia product", he said.

Mr Morgan observed that "Android's ecosystem differs greatly from the Symbian model" because, he said, none of those involved in it except Google "have any overwhelming influence" on the future of Android.
