&lt;span&gt;In news that could be of interest to wireless communications device users, research has identified the most popular smartphone operating system (OS).&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;According the report from Gartner, Android has now surpassed its competitors to become the most popular system in the world in the first quarter of 2011.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;Meanwhile, Apple&amp;amp;#39;s share of the market also grew, the report confirmed, as sales of its mobiles to end users continue to rise.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;Overall, mobile phone sales reached 427.8 million units in the first three months of the year.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;This is 19 per cent higher than the same period in 2010, with smartphones now accounting for 85 per cent more of the market share.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;Although Nokia is still the largest phone manufacturer, it is struggling to perform in the market.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;Its market share has dropped to 25.1 per cent, its lowest point since 1997, and Android now leads over Nokia&amp;amp;#39;s Symbian OS by almost ten million.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;a href="http://feeds.directnews.co.uk/feedtrack/justcopyright.gif?feedid=1785&amp;amp;itemid=800557252"&gt;&lt;img alt="ADNFCR-1785-ID-800557252-ADNFCR" src="http://feeds.directnews.co.uk/feedtrack/justcopyright.gif?feedid=1785&amp;amp;itemid=800557252" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;div style="clear:both;"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
