In news that may be of interest to wireless communication device customers, smartphone users appears to be driving online restaurant reservations.

The Livebookings Restaurant Index revealed that six per cent of UK online bookings are now made on mobile devices.

This represents an increase of two-thirds over the past six months, the study reported.

Andris Berzins, chief marketing officer at Livebookings, said that restaurants are starting to respond to changing consumer behaviours as diners "demand instant access to the services they want 24/7".

He added: "Our index study shows that many European markets today are benefitting from mobile to drive online reservations.

"The popularity of smartphones across Europe has fuelled the growth of mobile reservations."

But it isn't just the UK market that is showing growth. Indeed, Germany saw a massive 375 per cent increase in mobile online reservations compared with late 2010.

The service provider predicted that one in every five online reservations made in the UK, Sweden and Denmark will come from mobile users by 2012.
