Wireless communication device manufacturers may be interested to learn that Android has risen to both the top of the market share and data consumption lists.

This is according to new figures from market research company Nielsen, which has released its smartphone market share figures for the first quarter of 2011.

Android had only nine per cent of the market in 2010, but in the same period this year, it has 36 per cent.

Furthermore, the research found that iPhone owners are more likely to download applications, stream music and video, as well as download music and play games online.

Analysing 65,000 phone bills, Nielsen found that Android users were consuming an average of 582 MB of data per month. iPhone users, on the other hand, were only consuming 492 MB.

At present, there are more than 200,000 apps available for Android. Google runs the apps store, though they can be downloaded through third-party sites.

Posted by Simon Jones
