The automotive semiconductor market is set for a strong year, it has been suggested.

IC Insights explained this is due to increased use of sophisticated electronic systems in mid and lower-priced automobiles, newelectronics.co.uk has reported.

The market analyst firm has increased its forecast for average semiconductor content per automobile to $350, a 15 per cent rise from an average of $305 in 2010.

Safety features are, of course, required on the majority of new vehicles sold in Europe, US and Japan.

In Europe, for example, tyre pressure sensors will soon be a requirement on all new cars.

This requirement, which was introduced in the US in 2006, could boost the applications of tyre pressure monitoring systems.

In other industry news, Freescale Semiconductor Holdings last week raised a less-than-expected $783 million in its initial public offering.

The company confirmed that it sold 43.5 million shares for $18 each.

Posted by Simon Jones
