Wireless communication device manufacturers may be interested to learn that Vigil Software has claimed it is the responsibility of security technology companies to devise a way to deal with the influx of employee-owned devices into the workplace.

Alex Teh, commercial director of the information security solutions firm, described the use of workers' own gadgets for business as "the rise of consumerism".

"It's up to companies like us to actually find the technologies able to combine the security solutions to essentially manage the rise of consumerism," he remarked.

Workers are, Mr Teh observed, bringing technologies like "iPhones, iPads [and] smartphones" into the "corporate network" because they want to use them and they are sufficiently powerful.

Managing this trend would involve encrypting smartphones and controlling what is uploaded and downloaded to them, he added.

Some 61 per cent of information technology leaders in the UK believe that any employee-owned mobile device poses a greater risk to the enterprise than company-supplied devices do, according to research by ISACA.

Posted by Andre Dixon
