In news that may interest smartphone communication device manufacturers, a new survey has revealed that the number of US smartphone users averaged 74.6 million from February through April.

This is, Comscore explained, a 13 per cent rise from the previous three months.

In addition to this, Comscore said that 234 million Americans over the age of 12 were using mobile devices.

Despite this, analysts have claimed that carriers need to do more to encourage consumers to switch to smartphones.

"Introductory limited-data plans of $10 to $15 a month will expand the market greatly for these devices and, in many cases, consumers will upgrade to higher-priced data plans over time once they get hooked on these services," Hugues de la Vergne, a principal research analyst at Gartner, commented.

Meanwhile, anti-virus software provider Norton warned last week that mobile users are oblivious to the fact that they need to protect their phones because they don't realise their handsets hold the same personal information as their PC.

Con Mallon, director of regional product marketing at the consumer online protection brand, observed that consumers do not see smartphones as a computer.

Posted by Andre Dixon
