Consumers are looking for operating system (OS) consistency when purchasing smartphones and tablet devices, it has been suggested.

Paul Spain, co-host of the NZ Tech Podcast, has claimed that the iPad is the most popular tablet computer in New Zealand and that this is partly because iPod and iPhone users are familiar with Apple's iOS software.

The expert explained that for such consumers, the iPad essentially serves as a larger version of their iPhone or iPod touch.

"iOS's main competition in New Zealand is Windows. For many years HP, Lenovo and others have offered tablet variation of their smallest laptops. These continue to sell as a small percentage of laptop sales. Android is also starting to gain a small market share in New Zealand and this is expected to grow as prices come down," he commented.

The expert added that with a number of new releases on the horizon, tablets are set to replace desktop computers and laptops.
