Technology giant Apple has secured top spot in the Australian smartphone market, new research has revealed.

Despite a five per cent year-on-year dip on the overall market, Apple saw shipments of its iPhone products increase in the region by 13 per cent for the quarter.

According to the latest Mobile Device Tracker from analysis firm IDC, this represents the first time Apple has been number on in the country, boasting a market share of more than one-third.

Mark Novosel, telecommunications analyst at IDC, commented: "Nokia suffered a double whammy, the feature phone market collapsed, with 79 per cent of new mobiles shipped now being smartphones. Meanwhile, Symbian took a huge tumble, as consumers shy away from the platform ahead of Nokia's transition to Windows Phone.

"Symbian lost 9.5 per cent market share, more than double IDC's forecast decline. We expected Symbian to decline steadily throughout 2011, however the pace of decline has exceeded all expectations, with the majority of would-be Symbian buyers heading to Apple."
