Security firm issues warning to smartphone users

A leading security firm has claimed that Android and Apple devices are coming under increasing attack from malware and Trojans.

Trusteer warned that up to 20 Apple and Android mobile phones could be infected by dangerous software over the next 12 months.

Mickey Boodaei, the chief executive of Trusteer, commented: "Fraudsters have all the tools they need to effectively turn mobile malware into the biggest customer security problem we've ever seen."

Within 12 to 24 months, Trusterr warned that 5.6 per cent of all Android phones and iPads or iPhones could become infected by malware, assuming fraudsters start integrating 'zero-day' vulnerabilities into their attacks.

Mr Boodaei added: "There are no real controls around the submission process that could identify and prevent publishing malicious applications on these stores. Compared to Apple's App Store, Android Market is the Wild West."

Meanwhile, the third generation of Motorola's Android-powered Droid smartphone has been launched in the US.

Otherwise known as the Milestone in Europe, the device features a 4" qHD display as well as a five-row slide-out QWERTY keyboard, the Independent has reported.
