HTC set to appeal against Apple patent ruling

Wireless communication device manufacturer HTC has announced that it will appeal against a US ruling that it infringed two Apple patents.

Assuming last week's ruling by the US International Trade Commission is not overturned, the US may ban imports of some HTC phones.

HTC was guilty of violating two Apple patents when it produced mobile phones based on the Android operating system, the ruling said.

Analysts have warned that the ruling may have industry-wide implications.

The news prompted shares in HTC to fall seven per cent earlier this morning (Monday, July 18th).

Meanwhile, new figures have suggested that Google's Android is trouncing Apple's iPhone in the UK smartphone market.

Research outfit Kantar Worldpanel found that Android has gained a massive amount of market share in the past 12 months.

Android has surged from 10.7 per cent of UK smartphones in June 2010 to a 45.2 per cent in June 2011, wireless communication device manufacturers may be interested to learn.
