&lt;span&gt;ARM, the chip company which designed the &amp;amp;#39;brains&amp;amp;#39; behind the iPad, has confirmed that 1.1 billion processors based on its architecture were shipped in smartphones and tablets, wireless communication device users may be interested to learn.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;According to the firm, it saw a 25 per cent increase in second quarter pre-tax profits of £54.2 billion on revenue up 18 per cent at £117.8 million the previous quarter.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;The announcement outstripped the estimates of analysts, who had expected pre-tax profits of £45.3 million.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;Commenting on the results, Warren East, the ARM chief executive, said: &amp;amp;quot;In the first half of 2011, we have seen strong license revenues ... major semiconductor vendors and consumer electronics companies are making long-term commitments to using ARM technology ... underpinning growth in ARM&amp;amp;#39;s long-term royalty revenues.&amp;amp;quot;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;Further to this, ARM confirmed that second quarter licensing revenue jumped 59 per cent to $58.1 million (£35.5 million) compared with the same period in 2010.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span&gt;Posted by Simon Jones&lt;/span&gt;&lt;a href="http://feeds.directnews.co.uk/feedtrack/justcopyright.gif?feedid=1785&amp;amp;itemid=800635151"&gt;&lt;img alt="ADNFCR-1785-ID-800635151-ADNFCR" src="http://feeds.directnews.co.uk/feedtrack/justcopyright.gif?feedid=1785&amp;amp;itemid=800635151" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;div style="clear:both;"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
