Android's popularity due to 'diversity of hardware'

In news that may interest wireless communication device manufacturers, Stuff magazine has claimed that the popularity of the Android operating system is largely down to "the diversity of hardware available" for the platform.

According to the latest Q2 2011 smartphone market estimates from Canalys, Android boasts 48 per cent of the global market share.

Will Findlater, editor of Stuff magazine, observed that "the sheer weight of support for Android from manufacturers" means "there are Android phones from all the different manufacturers catering for all different needs and budgets".

Agreeing that Android phones are more flexible in terms of offering models designed for specific functions, Mr Findlater said: "If you have very specific needs, Android almost certainly will have apps that cater for them."

He added: "Apple's iOS for one certainly doesn’t compete in those ways at the moment."

Earlier this month, research revealed that Nokia was overtaken by Apple as the leading individual smartphone vendor.
