Microsoft and Apple have been accused of buying up technology patents in a bid to hold back Android, wireless communication device users may be interested to learn.

Writing in a blog post, a leading lawyer at Google said the firms have used "bogus patents" to crank up the cost of Android-powered devices.

According to Google's chief legal officer David Drummond, Android's emergence had driven its rivals to unite, launching a "hostile, organised campaign" against the mobile operating system.

Responding to the news, Microsoft explained that Google had been invited to bid with it on key patents but declined the opportunity.

This comes shortly after Stuff magazine claimed that the popularity of the Android operating system is largely down to "the diversity of hardware available" for the platform.

Will Findlater, editor of Stuff magazine, observed that "the sheer weight of support for Android from manufacturers" means "there are Android phones from all the different manufacturers catering for all different needs and budgets".

Posted by Andre Dixon
