The combined semiconductor opportunity for tablets and e-readers will approach $16 billion by 2015, new research has suggested.

According to In-Stat, each device segment targets a different type of consumer.

Stephanie Ethier, senior analyst from In-Stat, commented: “There is a continued revenue opportunity for e-reader OEMs over the next five years, especially as price points drop to extremely affordable levels.”

She added: “For tablets, market drivers such as new market entrants, increasing tablet application availability, and declining prices, will have a profound impact. These factors will fuel unit shipment growth to over 720 per cent over the forecast period.”

Last week, Will Findlater, editor of Stuff magazine, observed that Apple's dominance in the tablet market shows no signs of waning.

Indeed, he remarked that the success of the iPad range means that "Apple still certainly has a stranglehold".

"It has the best combination of hardware and software available at the moment," Mr Findlater explained.

Posted by Andre Dixon
