RIM 'likely' to offer Android compatibility on new phones

Research in Motion (RIM), the firm behind BlackBerry, appears increasingly likely to offer Android compatibility on its forthcoming phones, wireless communication device users may be interested to learn.

At present, critics suggest that BlackBerry does not boast enough applications by allowing the devices to run those built for the Android operating system.

On its blog in February, App ShopSavvy revealed that "someone in Waterloo, Ontario (where RIM is based), has been running ShopSavvy for Android on various BlackBerry devices"

The 8300, 8600 and 8520 were recorded running ShopSavvy this year, ShopSavvy said.

"This makes sense since BlackBerry OS can support Java Virtual Machines and it would be pretty easy to compile Android in one of the them," the firm explained.

ShopSavvy added: "This is a pretty interesting development - we would love to optimize ShopSavvy for the new BlackBerry+Android."

This comes after Conrad Longmore, editor of Mobile Gazette, observed that no amount of polishing can disguise the BlackBerry 7 operating system's age.
