Olympic Games 'going to drive 3G mobile phone coverage'

The 2012 Olympic Games is going to drive 3G mobile phone coverage and data capacity in the UK.

This is according to Steve Reynolds, president of the Mobile Data Association, who observed that "everybody is going to want to use the phone when 11.8 million ticket holders and visitors land on us".

As a result, Mr Reynolds explained, the network is going to have to be able to cope with the extra strain.

"They've started to do some things with the existing network, not necessarily to get more blanket coverage but to get more capacity out of it," he told wireless communication device users and others.

"Recently Ofcom did realise this is going to be a problem, and they basically said they could increase the power on the base stations, which gives that extra coverage and also that extra capacity they're looking for. So Ofcom [did] listen."

The London 2012 Olympic Games will begin on July 27th and will run through until August 12th.
