In news that may interest wireless communication device users, MPs have given their support to a motion allowing them to use Twitter during commons debates.

Indeed, an amendment that would have effectively outlawed MPs using the social networking site was defeated by 206 votes to 63.

While some MPs suggested that the increasing prominence of wireless communication devices during proceedings would bring the Commons into "disrepute", others pointed to the fact that it was a smart way to communicate with the electorate.

Shadow deputy commons leader Angela Smith argued that "it would be all too easy" to say MPs should ignore that the world had changed.

However, she added: "To do that would be to deny reality and to deny the dynamic relationship that now exists between parliament and the world outside."

Labour's Luciana Berger pointed to the fact that only two countries in Europe currently banned MPs from tweeting during proceedings, prompting her to insist that the UK should not join them.

Posted by Andre Dixon
