Microsoft unveils Windows operating system

Microsoft has unveiled its long-awaited Windows operating system, wireless communication firms will be among those interested to learn.

Designed to run on tablet computers, as well as desktop and laptop PCs, Windows 8 is due to be released in 2012.

It will, Microsoft has confirmed, work on the popular ARM-designed low power processors.

Speaking at the unveiling of the new device in California, Windows division president Steven Sinofsky remarked: "We re-imagined Windows. From the chipset to the user experience."

In other industry news, James Holland, editor at electricpig.co.uk, a gadget news website that aims to deliver the latest on technology, observed recently that the iPhone 5 will influence "every other manufacturer for at least the next 12 months".

He also said that Microsoft and Nokia are edging closer to pushing Windows Phone 7 into the mainstream.

"The first Nokia devices to run Microsoft's software have been promised soon and could be the stiffest competition to the iPhone and Android yet," Mr Holland commented.
