RIM sees fall in Q2 profits

Research in Motion (RIM), the manufacturer of the BlackBerry device, has confirmed that it has seen its second-quarter profits more than halve.

RIM announced that net profit was $329 million (£208 million) for the three months to 27 August, down from $797 million in the same period a year earlier, wireless communication device users may be among those interested to learn.

Some 10.6 million BlackBerry smartphones and around 200,000 Blackberry PlayBook tablets were shipped during the quarter - which is significantly below analysts' expectations.

The announcement saw RIM's shares fall by ten per cent in after-hours trading in New York.

In other industry news, Samsung recently filed a patent complaint against Apple in France, arguing that its US rival infringed on three mobile technology patents in the iPhone and iPad.

A Samsung spokeswoman confirmed that the French case is based on "three technology patents, and not on the design of the tablets".
