RIM confirms delay in update for Blackberry PlayBook

Research In Motion (RIM), the maker of the Blackberry PlayBook, has confirmed that it has delayed an update to the tablet computer's operating system until 2012, wireless communication device users may wish to know.

According to RIM, it will begin delivering the software in February. Originally, though, the firm said that it expected to begin delivery this month.

Some analysts suggested that the news may do serious damage to the BlackBerry brand.

"It is a big setback for them. When they launched the tablet they tried to walk the line between a consumer device and an enterprise device," Jon Erensen, research director at the technology specialists Gartner, commented.

"People were hoping the initial limitations would be corrected with the update by now. The delay means they fall even further behind."

Meanwhile, Mike Lazaridis, the founder of the BlackBerry handset, recently apologised to users of BlackBerry devices following a three-day blackout of services.
