If you want a non-threatening but intimate activity, try the science of reading fingerprints. Few people can resist an offer to scientifically "read" their fingerprints. And you get to hold hands.

I just published a blog on how to do this here:

So have a go at examining your fingerprints and check out the medical studies. With fingerprint recognition coming back in a big way in many cell phones, I can imagine some crafty employer looking for personality characteristics in your fingerprints.

At the very least I would expect a bunch of apps to pop up claiming to read your personality and your mother's history from your fingerprints.

If you find this scary, it might indicate what type of fingerprint you have. If you just find this interesting, it might indicate a different type of fingerprint.....

DAB, I envy you in this and urge you to never take it for granted. Feather your nest and re-feather it. People should reinforce the good things in their lives. I just bought my daughter-in-law a really nice 7/8ths guitar because she has small hands. I wanted to do something nice for her as she is a devoted mom to my grandkids. I got her son a nice 3/4 guitar. He has big hands but he is six years old, so they are small for now. I got the granddaughter bongos because she is three. Son already had a large collection of guitars. Now there is one more fun thing to do when they are home.

One possibility is an ergonomic improvement to her studio, like a new chair or better lighting. Then, she will have another material reminder of your caring.
