Ah, I remember making room lights for my friend(whom I met while playing counter strike). I made two light panels consisting of condenser Mic, blue, green and Red Led which glows/reacts according to the music beats. He loved it.

I'm thinking that a dancing robot would be a suitable project.

The moves would need to be planned, or it could respond to music.

I saw this the other day on Top Gear.

It's nice to know that music does not always need to be derived from speakers.

My Music Tech Challenge project can let lion dance with music.

But drum is lion dance's soul !!! I don't think it can be replace by electronic music.

How about a little doll with spring like legs and permanent magnets mounted to the bottom of his feet. Then you could place him on a platform with a grid of electromagnets underneath and a little bit of electronics to allow you to activate the electromagnets individually. You could program him to dance to the beat of the music.

How about a system where dance moves translate to music notes/chords - either from a visual image (video camera) or body sensors - such that the dancer 'plays' the music. The leg/feet position would define a chord, and arm/hand position, a note.

actually, it does not quite relate with King fu. true King fu masters would not accept to teach trainers the skills of Lion Dance in the old times. I built an electronic drum machine with MIDI out once. It had 64 force sensitive sensors so it could be used to capture steel band drumming - or any other instrument with up to 64 notes. I always wanted to take another shot at it as the sensors had a little cross talk - they were so sensitive that a hit on an adjacent sensor could register on nearby sensors. I had considered entering the Music Tech Challenge, but it was pretty expensive to make full sized steel pans, not to mention all the electronics to handle 64 channels and a lot of instrument software features. Finding time is sometimes the toughest challenge.
