As the gift giver, I'm sorry to hear it, that's terrible!
I have a laptop strain relief fail before and I used Sugru flexible putty, its very good for that type of thing.

Ill be feeding this back to our head of multicomp as well, thank you so much for telling us about your problems with this product.

this is the usual cable management for a pocket style meter. Do you see damage?

Also: can you show a photo when holding it, to see the size?

I have found that some extra strain relief at the probe end of low-cost leads is also useful in prolonging their life.

Maybe a little discrete hot glue or silicone to stiffen the stress point, tapering down, so the stress is spread over a larger radius with no sharp discontinuities.

Could you also please let me know if the NCV function works in your DMM?
I have a similar model in the usual orangish-yellow shade, the NCV is not able to detect concealed wiring in my apartment.
I'm guessing it is mostly because the houses in my country (India) are made of reinforced concrete and the wires are concealed inside these walls. But I want to be sure that RCC is the problem and not the DMM. Thanks

Maybe try putting a huge heat shrink tubing or some kind of tape and wrap the wires at the connection point. Or use some hot glue/epoxy based glue at the connection point. Or better, use a spiral wrapping for the probes. The one shown below

Are those probes permanently attached? I.e. not pluggable.
