I like shelves at the back of the bench for test gear. Keeps the cables out of the way (to an extent). The easily accessible gear changes quite often according to what I'm working on.

Tidiness is volatile.

Being long in the tooth, my eyes need lots of light to function reasonably.

If and when you decide on shelving over the desk, set the lower shelf wider to give you some space for over the bench lighting.

What nothing on the floor? Valuable storage space you can walk and trip over:)
