This is what a chap called Cory Doctorow calls the ‘enshi*ification” of technology and the Internet. HP tried this with their ink cartridges. It’s just a way of locking customers in and then charging over the odds. The manufacturers lobbied US legislators to pass legislation to make it a federal offence (10 years in jail) for breaking software controls and using that information.

I had been looking at the DYMO 450 Duo, as I mainly work with D1 labels and want to replace an existing Label Manager PnP but they don't appear to do a direct replacement.
