This is by far the best community I have found. Members and staff are helpful without patronising someone who asks a question. I look at answers to questions on a lot of other forums and am disappointed by how unhelpful some of them are.

I know it’s been said above, but this is the best community site I have ever come across or been involved in. Everyone is helpful, patient, informative, encouraging and friendly. There’s a great amount of really useful information available. Thanks to everyone who makes this possible.

Element14 and the rest of us who use this site are lucky to have someone like you to wrangle the cats, meself included, and keep the Project14 and other site community events on track. The work you do on this site is nothing sort of amazing and I could not even image the amount of work that goes on in the background to keep a site like this humming along.

I want to reassure the community members that the people that run this community are good people that have the interest of the community members at heart. I don't know of anything like this that exists.

Some say it takes a village to raise a kid, but it really takes a community of talented and dedicated folks to ensure a site with posts coming in from all over the globe up and running. The talented and dedication of folks behind the scenes at element14 is quite evident once one enters the site. To borrow a quote from a recent Keanu Reeves appearance at E3, "You're Breathtaking!".

There was a recent post on the site by some who stated the following regarding their impression of element14.

"I was expecting an Adafruit or Sparkfun type site."

I did not respond to this post, however my thought regarding this comment is "good, I'm glad it is not like the others". The sites this poster listed are good sites and there are others that are similar in respect to design contests, however nothing can is like what element14 offers and that is a good thing. The difference is what attracts me to the site.

I am just humbled to be allowed to participate on this site, despite going off on a tangent periodically, and feel I have grown both technically and personally by being involved.

When the day comes that you decide to step away from your duties with element14, you'll certainly leave Shaq sized shoes to fill by the next person. You certainly have a set a high bar for any that follow you as well as for the rest of us.

Thanks for your hardwork and dedication to this site.

I do not know of anything similar to Element14 but then I'm relatively new to this blogging/sharing/community thing. I think Element14 is just great. I've always loved electronics since I was about 5 or 6 as I can remember going on my own to the local TV repair shop (such things no longer exist) with my own pocket money to buy a low voltage bulb for a bicycle lamp and a battery and then lying under a deck chair in the garden with a couple of scavenged lengths of wire using plasticine to stick the wires to the battery to make the bulb light up (technically this is electrical engineering but hey - I was very young). I failed miserably as I didn't know how to connect the bulb (now I know it was one side connection and one bottom connection to the small solder button). It put me off electronics for years and I didn't try anything again until I was about 10 or 11 years old. If only someone had told me what to do when I was 5, how much more would I have achieved. Now, electronics is still my hobby and I am retired, and Element14 provides me with an environment to keep getting envolved. I can make mobile robots to my hearts content.

PS One thing I would do differently if I had been more aware of Element14 was to get my students involved by incorporating the Project14 competitions into their practical assessments, it would have been much more fun for them and for me.

There is no doubt in my mind this is the best tech community in the solar system, thanks to the members, the staff and the sponsors.

Many words of wisdom have been written in the forum discussions on the topic of motivating participation, but there is always room for more.

So here is an idea to discuss:

As members participate, their qualities become apparent but these qualities are not directly recognized or rewarded.

I often see qualities in members that I think would distinguish them as desirable and valuable employees.

If we could recognize valuable qualities in some consistent way, these "certificates" would be desirable and they could be used on resumes.

If these certificates are seen to play a roll in applying for jobs, they would become even more desirable and members would be motivated to earn them.

Many valuable qualities are not an explicit part of a degree program, so it might be valuable to have another way of verifying them.

Qualities like:

perseverance
helpfulness (I know we have badges for this already, but it is not fully recognized yet)
creativity
respectfulness
honesty/integrity
work ethic
knowledge
will to learn
inquizitiveness
communication skills
level-headedness
passion/enthusiasm
problem solving skill
congeniality
conscientiousness
diligence
intelligence
responsible
reliable
tactfulness
tolerance
etc.

Obviously for a certificate to have real meaning, there would need to be properly demonstrated traits under suitable conditions.

Currently employers rely on a few references for these types of characteristics, but a widely public forum endorsement might be a useful reference as well.

You wouldn't have to use the forum for this but it might be useful if it was available and it might motivate some to participate more.

I would not expect there to be any such thing as a negative certificate - that would not be perceived as valuable by any member.

I can see some other potential drawbacks but it is fun to try and figure out a workable system.

Very well written Tariq!! None of this could be possible without great management and great members. This is why our community is so successful!!

A couple of ideas to attract new members:

- Road tests especially designed for beginners who want to learn.

- Have a mentor assigned to new members to guide them.
