And sometimes Adafruit does messed up stuff.. like very generic libraries (so they can reuse the code for future products maybe?) and sometimes laziness in some board layouts, so if that occurs then I don't trust the libraries without looking at the source either.

They're not the only ones... I'm trying to work through some device datasheet from a semiconductor manufacturer, and there's severe oddness or laziness in the schematic there, to the level that I'm having to buzz out the eval board with an ohmmeter : (

That looks really neat! It's a really cool idea to use this multi-color e-paper for such warning signs. These displays are awesome once you hit on good use-cases for them.

I've not tried these multi-color displays, I'm sure it takes longer to update in it's total clean mode rather than the partial modes (and maybe the library isn't running the interface as fast as it could) but for your use-case it's likely it doesn't matter at all, since it is rare someone will be watching it when it changes, or if they see the sign changing it is clear they should pause to read it.

The display looks nice once the crazy flickering has finished. My wife has a Kindle which uses e-paper and there is none of this flickering.

That is really quite a crazy flicker/update issue with the LCD. Was that video in real speed or was that a slow motion video?

Good luck getting the display fixed.
