They still used AVOs when I was learning electronics in the early 90s! I even dropped one off a hospital roof onto a Mercedes once (true story, and it wasn't deliberate!). Nostalgic work of art, so they are!

Here's a picture of my AVO.

It used to belong to George Wise who (amongst other things) designed a magnetic pickup cartridge for the HJ Leak HiFi company. I have several bits and pieces of his which I bought from his daughter Ruby when he died a few years ago. George was a toolmaker and the AVO lives in a wooden case which he made. I never use it but I don't think I'll be selling it.
