I don't use mugs unless when I drink tea.

I have a bunch of mugs, promotional, Starbucks, standard generic ones, etc.

What kind of beverage is in your mug?
One coffee per day and the rest (about 6 or 7) teas. You can see from the tannin-stained AWS mug that I save on washing up and re-use one mug all day.
What is you favorite mug?
I do quite like the geekiness of the Visual Studio with Mug<T> on the other side. When they were younger I used to love telling my kids to watch out for someone stealing my favourite black mug as I was filling it with boiling water. It would turn white and I'd act surprised that my black mug had gone. Pantomime stuff. They're too old to appreciate that dad humour now.
What is your weirdest mug?
One for the garage - a Castrol that has fake oily fingerprints as part of the design. It looks disgustingly filthy even straight out of the dishwasher. My wife hates it.

I too have many mugs for which I paid nothing.

Some have pens, others have pencils.

I use my glass Ball mug for hot chocolate during the season and sometimes for tea.

The mug on the left I purchased while on assignment in Ottawa, Canada. I estimate I have had it for 32 years. My relationship with my mother in-law was less than ideal. When I retired, I took the mug on a retirement planned trip to a remote fishing camp in northern Newfoundland. On route to the fishing location in an ocean vessel, we stopped to carve a chunk of ice from an iceberg. I have a picture of me holding a mug of Crown Royal with 5K year old ice humming in the mug. The Crown Royal was a gift from the people I worked with.

The second mug, I have two of them given by different people, violates a standing rule in my house. I am not permitted to write about any family member. I have at times done it, by changing the names. That only works provided if it is not read within a family circle. If a story is discovered that is suspected to be about a family member immediately phone calls are exchanged to determine who is being targeted and I'm hauled to task.

Mugs are most useful for coffee, and even though I have plenty of mugs, the only two in the active rotation are the center two (my wive and mine - Grandma and Grandpa mugs).

From left to right here are the top six mugs in the collection (which was greatly thinned out when we packed up and moved to Texas about four years ago:

1) This is our daughters coffee mug for when she visits. This is a highly appropriate mug for her as she is a color designer for a shoe company, HOKA (previously with New Balance).

2) This is a gift mug that my last (and best) boss brought back for the crew after he and his family were off on a 6-month immersion visit to Spain.

3 & 4) The Grandma and Grandpa mugs.

5) Another gift mug, based on my dislike for the squirrels that are constantly emptying (or, now trying to empty) our bird feeders.

6) An old work mug, "Hard Work Cafe", is a inside joke (and a blatant ripoff of the Hard Rock Cafe) about a long and busy project launch where we worked many weekends in exchange for food (mostly pizza). I was the software manager and chief architect for the development for the Zehntel 1800 In-circuit tester (later Teradyne).

Well, if its' a mug, it's going to be coffee 99.9% of the time. Tea if I'm sick and need a little something "extra" for the sore throat. ;-) My fav mug, or cup as I refer to them, is a Bob Ross one similar to your Tardis one, it has a black background that shows a painting when hot liquid is poured in. Other than that. I drink from a tall double wall cup that looks like a red solo cup, that usually iced tea, sweet. Then there's cans, that's generally RedBull, bad for me I know, but it's one of my few vices.
