I know it's a bit of a jump up in price, but I bought a stereo microscope about 6 years ago and it has proven to be well worth it. Amscope seems to be the brand to go for in the US - a good balance of price / quality. I'm in the UK so got an unbranded equivalent via eBay as Amscope weren't available here and shipping / customs was a pain.

I use a headband magnifier similar to https://www.newark.com/aven/26115/headband-magnifier-1x-3-5x-w-led/dp/70AJ1183?st=magnifier

The drawback is the LED is insufficient, and I need to use a lamp with it.

Nice one! The light really helps if it is bright enough and shinning at the correct angle. It would interesting to know if anyone has tried this one out.
