My Project

18 Oct 2014

Let me introduce myself. Name is Mark and I am just embarking on a PhD at the University of Portsmouth looking at smart homes and how they can provide care and monitoring for vulnerable adults. I am looking at using the

  • Arduino Uno
  • Arduino Mega
  • Beaglebone Black (Rev C)
  • Raspberry Pi B+

to do so. I am not sure what combination of kit I am going to use, some bits might be hopeless at some tasks but perfect for others so it might be a mixture of all or maybe a single bit of kit will be fine. I have three years to find out.

I am going to be blogging about the Beaglebone Black, (BBB from now on as I am lazy), the Arduino and the Pi in the correct groups so anyone interested in progress in other boards check out the various areas.

That's all for now, just want to say hi and give a basic into as to my ideas, all and any advice will be looked at and considered and anything that gets me trips to conferences abroad will be most appreciated

Hi Mark, It sounds like an interesting project. I suggest that you first define all the things that you want to do and then look at the available components that help make that happen. If you try to force…

Thanks. I will take a look. I sort of think of the BBB as the RasPi on steroids. I like the flash capability and the USB connectivity on the BBB but of course the Pi was the earlier machine so has a special place in a lot of people's hearts.

RasPi: offered for sale 29 Feb 2012, shipped April 2012

BBB is latest in a long line of Beagles, all using TI ARM Cortex-A8 SoCs:

    BeagleBoard: introduced July 2008.

    BeagleBone (white): introduced Oct 2011.

    BBB: introduced April 2013.

I would like to get a B+ to play with and see if that makes up ground, I understand it has extra GPIO pins among other enhancements. I will see how things work out. At this point I am open (source image ) minded, if I go into this with set ideas then I am asking for trouble.

    Hi Mark,

Here's a good thread about the tradeoffs between RasPi and BBB: http://www.element14.com/community/thread/23575

    Hi DAB

I spoke to a professor from a uni up north and he said that such things in the past had been looked at and found to be seriously lacking as they seem to be tackled from a "I can do it so I will do it" slant as opposed to looking at what the users need and building up from that viewpoint. I am going to tackle it from the needs of the user rather than just designing a system that seems like a rich man's toy. This is the challenge; I hate smart homes being built for someone who just wants a smart home because it is the done thing. It all comes down to fulfilling the needs of the user. By tackling it that way I should be able to see what is going to be best rather than just saying to myself "I want to get it to work this way". You are quite right, by thinking about the end goal and trying to force my project to fit into a pre-conceived idea is fraught with danger. I have an excellent team of supervisors and I think that they agree with you and if it looks like I am straying they will pull me back I am sure. image
