If only all repairs were that simple. I'm in the middle of a washing machine teardown at the moment, and all the usual suspects have solid alibis.

Sounds like a cunning way to get someone else to pay for the batteries. Either that or the parents were enjoying the peace that often comes with flat batteries. Great share D Squared.

I have a house full of grandchildren at the moment. My daughter and her husband and two kids are in between homes. They are squatting in the basement while they wait to check off all the boxes on their wish list before they purchase their dream home. It was suppose to be for six months but now I expect another year.

My grand daughter comes to me often, with encouragement from her mother, for me to fix toys. I have been using the opportunities to get her to troubleshoot the problem. If the problem is battery related, she works through removing the cover and replacing them while I offer encouragement.

My motive is to foster her in developing problem solving skills. Few in my family have the skill or in actual fact, want to use them to solve their own problems, before asking someone else for help. I find it frustrating when you ask, "what do you mean it doesn't work?" and the response doesn't even contain I tried turning it off an on. "It just doesn't work! How would I know."

Problem solving doesn't provide instant gratification, it take time and that doesn't appear to be acceptable today.
