That is interesting but easier way is to make sure when you install the distro you select manual for your disk drive layout. This way you can sort layout any way you need. I personally like the following.

/root (small 100mb or so this depends on the image.

/ (file system)

/export/home ( this is where you mount your user file system.) ps the user filesystem is an NFS mount. by doing this my home filesystem is the same on any of the 5 or 6 computers in my place.

/swap (me I am old school for desktop systems it's safe to use 2x real memory or Max memory if you plan to add later)

OPTIONAL

/opt (is a place where software not part of the OS should live ... very old school)

/var/logs (if this is a production box this will stop the DOS attack, and fill your drive up.)

RULE: NEVER PUT LIVE SOFTWARE OF ANY KIND (including script files) IN /var (such as some distros do.

FAST-FIX please see G-Parted this tool will resize partitions for you. this is a must-have tool in your tool-box.
